Prof. Rathinasamy Maria Saleth has obtained his MA from Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai (1979), M. Phil from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi (1982), and Ph. D from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1989). Prof. Saleth is currently the Director, Madras Institute of Development Studies, Chennai, India. He also serves as an honorary Professor at the University of South Australia, Adelaide (since 2004). Previously, Prof. Saleth has been a Principal Researcher at the International Water Management Institute, Colombo, Sri Lanka (2002-08) and a Visiting Research Fellow at the World Bank, Washington, DC (1998). He has been a Professor of Ecological Economics at the Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore (2000-2002) and Professor of Agricultural Economics at the Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi (1991-2000). With his specialization on Resource and Environmental Economics, Institutional Economics, and Quantitative Techniques, Prof. Saleth works in the areas of water institutional reform, water resource management, agricultural policy, and impact assessment. He has published several articles and four books: Water Institutions in India: Economics, Law, and Policy (1996), Strategic Linkages in Rural Diversification: Empirical Analysis and Policy Issues (1999), Water Resources and Economic Development (2001), and The Institutional Economics of Water (2004). Prof. Saleth has also won several awards for some of his papers, books, and works from professional organizations such as the Indian Society of Agricultural Economics, American Water Resources Association, International Water Association, and University of South Australia. Besides his regular academic and research activities, Prof. Saleth has also contributed to the national and international policy processes by serving as member in several committees, expert panels, and working groups of the Government of India, United Nations Development Programme, UNESCO, and World Water Council. He has also been consultant to the World Bank, Food and Agriculture Organisation, Asian Development Bank, and UN ESCAP. Prof. Saleth has also participated in several national and international conferences, seminars, and workshops as participant, resource person, and keynote speaker. Currently, Prof. Saleth serves as an Associate Editor of Water Policy (since 1998) and as a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Technological Forecasting and Social Change (since 1998) and Journal of Environmental and Ecological Management (since 2004). He has also been the Managing Editor of the Journal of Social and Economic Development (2000-02) and an Associate Editor of Water Resources Research (2002-04). He is a life member of the Indian Society of Agricultural Economics and Indian Social Sciences Association, and an active member of the International Water Resources Association (since 1998).
