Minerva Initiative Workshop - Welcome Statement
A DoD-sponsored, university-based social science research initiative
“A nation of free people depends on institutions of open inquiry and those institutions have an obligation to the defense of this nation of free people. Fulfilling that duty is not a matter of physical force, although our volunteer army allows citizens that choice. The Academy can best satisfy its obligation to national defense through its intellectual force. ... The purpose of the event today is a combination of both process and substance. Process so that the people associated and involved with the Minerva Initiative can answer all of your questions about how to actually use this Initiative and get the funding that the Initiative offers.
